The attractive port city of Niigata on Honshu Island is a wonderful stopover for some downtime, chilling, and respite from the hordes.
With only a 2-night whirlwind stopover in Niigata (新潟県; Niigata-ken), there isn’t much time to explore.
Niigata is a pleasure to wander through as the city is pristine and clean, and the locals are friendly.
Maybe an election is nearing as many small vans with boisterous loudspeakers drive around the city’s streets belting out words. People inside the vans shout?“arigato-zai mas”?(thank you very much) to passers-by while giving a royal wave with pristine white gloves – quite bizarre.
Head to the mouth of the majestic Shinano River, Japan’s longest river, and wander along the riverfront’s peaceful ambience.
Flowing an extensive 367 kilometres from Mount Kobushi in Honshu’s Japanese Alps to enter the Sea of Japan at Niigata, numerous bridges cross the Shinano River.
First constructed from timber in 1886 and stretching 782 metres across the grand Shinano River, the Bandai Bridge was destroyed by fire in 1905. Reconstructed to one-third of its length following a rediversion channel in Shinano River, this second bridge was replaced by a third-generation bridge in 1929 that is still in use today. ......
