Discover Hakodate: A Guide to Japan’s Northern Jewel, Hakodate, Japan
Before sharing experiences about the wonderful city of Hakodate, I’ll take a little time to introduce you to Japan’s amazing island of Hokkaidō (北海道) and so far, my favourite island.
As Japan’s northernmost and second-largest island, Hokkaidō boasts large wilderness expanses, primaeval forests, alpine wildflower fields, hot springs, and azure-blue caldera lakes.
Hokkaidō’s expansive spaces cover 20% of Japan’s land area with only 5% of the country’s population – an enticing drawcard for travellers wanting to escape Japan’s chaotic Honshu Island.
Freezing Siberian winds sweep over Hokkaidō from the Sea of Japan, so bring warm clothes even during April, Japan’s Spring.
Enjoy Hakodate’s charms, including historic buildings, diverse churches, vibrant city life, and the great outdoors.
If trekking is your passion, a quick 30-minute train ride from Hakodate lands you in Onuma Quasi-National Park, which offers magnificent natural scenery.
Also known as?“The city of gourmet food”, what other reason do you need to enjoy Hakodate? Check my previous travelogue –?Exploring Hakodate: Food, Sleep, and Travel Tips. ...... (follow the instructions below for accessing the rest of this article).
