Discover Cadiz鈥檚 Historic Gems: Europe鈥檚 Oldest City, Cadiz, Spain
C谩diz lays claim to being the聽oldest city still standing in Europe. That鈥檚 quite something. Over the centuries (and millenia), this beautiful coastal Andaluc铆an city has played a vital role in many different civilisations. It has more than its fair share of interesting stories.
In this blog I鈥檒l outline some of聽C谩diz鈥檚 historical gems聽鈥� including some unusual and lesser known, and some hidden in plain sight.
Before we dive into C谩diz鈥檚 specific historic gems, let鈥檚 first look at its overall history. C谩diz was聽founded more than 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians聽鈥� an early maritime civilisation primarily based in modern day Lebanon, who pop up all over Europe鈥檚 ancient history.聽
The city鈥檚 name comes from this time. The Phoenicians called the city Gadir, meaning 鈥榚nclosure鈥�. The city of Agadir likely has the same root.聽
C谩diz later became part of the聽Carthaginian Empire,聽and then聽fell to Rome in the 3rd century B.C.,聽under whom it flourished as a port and naval base. Like much of Spain, it spent the next few centuries changing hands 鈥� the聽Visigoths, who destroyed a lot of the original city, the聽Byzantines聽and, for more than 500 years, the聽Moors, before being conquered by Spanish forces in the 13th century.聽 ......
