Asahikawa is a quieter city in Japan that exudes a lovely, relaxed feel, away from other chaotic Japanese towns. Around 4 pm, Asahikawa鈥檚 temperatures drop, and the icy cold starts seeping in on this mid-April afternoon.

Famed as the coldest place in Japan, Asahikawa receives around 15 metres (49 feet) of snowfall each year. The coldest recorded temperature was -41掳C in 1902, but this year in 2023, the lowest was a cool -24.1掳C. No wonder this is a skier鈥檚 bliss destination.

The winter months are long with around 10 months of snow. If you鈥檙e lucky enough to visit during February, you can enjoy one of the many famous and iconic Ice Festivals.
