Templo Masónico (Masonic Temple), Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Masonic Temple was built for the Añaza Lodge, group of Freemasons, under the direction of architect Manuel de Cámara y Cruz. One of the first Masonic temples in the Canary Islands, it quickly became a central institution for Freemasonry in the region and was, at one point, the largest in Spain.
The exterior reflects a strong Egyptian Revival influence: its façade is divided into three parts, with two prominent columns topped by palm-leaf capitals supporting a triangular pediment. A Eye of Providence sits at the pediment’s centre. Below, the wooden main door is carved with geometric motifs, and the lintel is decorated with palm fronds and an eagle-winged sun.
Inside, the building originally included a reception hall, the main lodge chamber, a banquet room, and a subterranean “Reflection Chamber” carved into volcanic rock. The Añaza Lodge also used the site as a free educational centre.
The temple was repurposed as a military pharmacy and barracks. It remained closed after 1990 and in 2007 was declared a cultural monument, later a Monument to Historical Memory. Restoration began in 2022 to preserve its architectural and historical significance.
