Teatro Guimera (Guimera Theatre), Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Teatro Guimerá with its classical-romantic style structure, stands as the oldest theatre in the Canary Islands. It underwent renovations in the late 1980s under Carlos Schwartz to update its facilities and expand the stage area while preserving its historic layout.
The venue accommodates around 800 to 1,000 people across a rectangular auditorium surrounded by balconies, offering favourable acoustics for a variety of performances. It hosted opera from 1861 onward and served as a headquarters for the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra until the Auditorio de Tenerife opened in 2003.
Today, it remains an active cultural centre presenting theatre, music, dance, opera, and annual festivals including Carnival events, the Canary Islands Music Festival, and opera productions. Beyond performances, the theatre’s exterior plaza is home to the bronze sculpture For Hadrian by Igor Mitoraj. The piece symbolises comedy and tragedy with a large female face. Additionally, a seated bronze statue of Àngel Guimerà stands nearby.
