Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Parish of Our Lady of Pilar), Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Originally built in the mid-18th century, the Parish of Our Lady of Pilar is a Catholic parish church, officially inaugurated on 2 February 1750 by Bishop Juan Francisco Guillén Isso. Its central nave was later flanked by two lower side chapels. Within the church, visitors can observe a richly decorated neoclassical style wood ceiling and several notable altarpieces.

Among the most venerated artworks are the Baroque main altar and the statue of the Our Lady of Sorrows —called “La Republicana,” notable for being the only Marian image that participated in public procession during the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, despite such celebrations being banned.

The origins of the Parish trace back to an earlier chapel, reflecting widespread devotion to the Virgin of the Pillar in Tenerife. Following the naval attack by Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1797, the parish hosted a gathering of city merchants that contributed to Santa Cruz being granted town privileges—a status that fostered its growth as a city.
