Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace), Genoa

Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace), Genoa (must see)

The Doge’s Palace is one of Genoa’s most iconic landmarks and dates back to the late 13th century, originally serving as the administrative seat and residence of the Doges of the Republic of Genoa. Its strategic location spans two grand façades: one facing Giacomo Matteotti Square and the other overlooking De Ferrari Square.

Over the centuries, Doge's Palace has evolved into a rich architectural tapestry. The medieval core, including the 14th-century Grimaldina Tower and former prisons, is complemented by Gothic elements like the The Paper Gate (1438–1442), and later Renaissance-Mannerist expansions led by Andrea Ceresola and Simone Cantoni in the late 16th and 18th centuries. A major fire in 1777 initiated restorations that gave the palace its elegant neoclassical face and introduced the grand salons that visitors admire today.

Inside, visitors can explore the grand Halls of the Major and Minor Councils, the richly frescoed Doge’s Chapel, and the carefully restored medieval prison cells. Today, the palace serves as a lively cultural venue, regularly hosting prominent art exhibitions, concerts, lectures, and educational programs.
