Iglesia de San José (Church of San Jose), Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Church of San Jose, built in the mid-19th century and designed by José Enrique Marrero Regalado, is distinguished by its neoclassical façade and twin bell towers that frame its modest urban block.

Inside, the church shelters a range of religious artworks including statues of Saint Joseph of Nazareth, the Christ of Medinaceli, whose altar is adorned with red carnations on the first Friday of March, the Virgin of Fatima, the Lord of the Column, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and several Eastern-style icons. Its collection of liturgical books and missals dating from the late 18th to early 19th centuries also underscores its heritage as a centre for religious scholarship.

The building’s composition, with its rectangular plan and placement among residential structures, offers a window into the typical architectural fabric of El Toscal, a quarter recognised for its historical and cultural significance. Adjacent to the church, visitors will find a statue of Saint John Bosco, added in 2016 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Salesian order’s presence in the city.
