Iglesia de San Jorge (Church of San Jorge), Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Church of San Jorge was originally built as an Anglican church in 1897, designed by architect Walter I. Wood. Its foundation stone was laid on 22 June 1897, to mark Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee.
After declining Anglican attendance, the building was sold in 1989 to the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. It was then refurbished and consecrated as a Catholic place of worship on 23 September 1993, dedicated to Eucharistic adoration. An ecumenical service was held there on the eve of 25 July 1997 to commemorate the 1797 Battle of Santa Cruz—an event that resonates locally and is honoured each year.
The structure follows a Latin-cross floor plan, with a single nave framed by wooden diaphragm arches and an exposed timber roof. The interior features pointed-arch windows filled with stained glass and wooden flooring and pewing. The church occupies a modest landscaped site with gardens that include local trees such as dragon trees and banana palms.
