Iglesia de San Francisco de AsÃs (Church of St. Francis of Assisi), Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi first took shape as part of a Franciscan convent founded in the late 17th century, with the present church completed around 1680. Its construction merged local materials such as Canary stone with a distinct "Islander Baroque" style, featuring a triple-nave layout and robust toscano columns carved from red stone.
Among its treasures is the revered image of the Lord of Tribulations— a bust-like depiction of Christ reputed for ending an 1893 cholera epidemic following a city-wide procession.
The interior reveals an array of eight Baroque altarpieces, dating from different decades of the 18th century. The principal altarpiece, originally from a Dominican convent and restored in 2021, stands nearly eight metres tall and features a richly carved design with Solomonic columns and a neoclassical sagrario . An 18th-century organ in the choir loft exemplifies a Castilian-Andalusian Baroque heritage, built between 1778 and 1781 by a mainland artisan.
