Church of Saint Nicholas, Chania
The Church of Saint Nicholas in Chania is unlike any other in Greece, a building that carries the marks of conquest, faith, and resilience all at once. Its story begins in 1320, when Dominican monks raised it as a Catholic church during the Venetian era, serving the Latin community within the fortified quarter of Splantzia. In 1645, Chania fell to the Ottomans after a brutal siege, and the Dominicans were forced out. The church was converted into the Ibrahim Mosque, named for Sultan Ibrahim, and a towering minaret was built alongside the existing bell tower.
