Central United Methodist Church, Asheville

Central United Methodist Church has both spiritual and architectural importance. Founded in 1837, it began as the city鈥檚 first house of worship鈥攁 modest white-framed structure that served a small community of believers. From those humble beginnings, Central has grown into one of the most active congregations in western North Carolina, now welcoming over 3,000 members. The current sanctuary, whose construction began in 1902, sits on the very site of the original church, continuing a legacy of faith and outreach that has lasted for more than 180 years.

Central UMC is the city鈥檚 longest continuously operating church and a vital part of Asheville鈥檚 evolving social and religious history. Its journey includes key milestones such as the formation of Hopkins Chapel by formerly segregated members, a longstanding commitment to youth through Troop Four of the Boy Scouts, and a dedication to racial reconciliation in recent decades.
